About

Based in the NH Seacoast in Barrington, NH, Erin Dubois is an educator offering flute and piano lessons, a performer, and collaborative artist. She has appeared throughout New England as a performer, teacher, and clinician.

Erin has been teaching for over a decade and believes that all students, regardless of background, should have access to high quality education with a teacher who believes they can achieve anything they set their minds to. In lessons we focus on building the fundamentals of playing with tone work, etudes, solo pieces and ensemble work. I work with students to find what works best for them since everyone is different and I am constantly learning about different ways of teaching and communicating with students and their families. My students have gone on to have successful auditions and performances in competitions, recitals, and college auditions.

Erin currently plays second/third flute with the New Hampshire Philharmonic where she also serves as the orchestra’s Winds and Brass Personnel Manager. She is also an alternate for the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra on flute and piccolo. She previously served as the Principal Flutist for the Nashua Chamber Orchestra and past performances include The Tim Janis Ensemble, the Refugee Orchestra Project, Flute & Percussion duo Duo Dubois, flute choirs, recording projects, and solo performances. With a special interest in New Music, she has premiered dozens of works and has participated in commissions for new works for Flute and Piano and Flute Choir. She is currently on the substitute list for Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Symphony NH, Belmont Festival Orchestra, and the Lowell Philharmonic.

Erin holds an MM in Flute Performance from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst studying under Christopher Krueger and a BM in Flute Performance from the University of Southern Maine studying under Jean Rosenblum. Additionally, she has attended masterclasses at Le Domaine Forget, the Julius Baker Masterclass and the ARIA International Summer Music Academy.

As a teacher, Erin believes all students should have access to quality music education. She focuses on making sure her studio is accessible to students from all walks of life. She is a flute teacher and a Take Three Instructor at the Concord Community Music School; a flute teacher and beginner piano teacher at the Manchester Community Music School; and a flute, piano, and early childhood educator at Portsmouth Music and Arts Center. She also teaches the flute section of the Woodwind Methods class at UNH. She currently teaches private flute lessons at her home in Barrington, NH. Lessons

Are you looking for the moment your playing feels easy and free? I used to struggle with limitations in my playing until I met a teacher who changed my life. While studying with her, I developed a passion for the fundamentals, exercises that created ease of playing, and body awareness that allowed me to play expressively and with joy. I have been where you are, and I’m learning more every day - I understand the issues you may be facing with tone production, performance anxiety, technical facility, and practice habits and I know how to help!

We’re a good fit if:

  • You’re a beginner wishing to learn the instrument for the first time.

  • You’re a high school student preparing for All-State, college auditions, or you simply want to better your skills.

  • You’re a college-aged student looking to gain fresh perspective and ease of playing.

  • You’re an advanced level player looking for advice on audition material.

  • You’re an adult student who wants to better your playing or you’re coming back to your instrument.

With a beginner instrumentalist, we'll focus on how to properly care for your instrument, how to comfortably hold it, how to create a clean and rich tone, and the fundamentals of technique, theory, and ear training. Private lessons are a perfect supplement to large group, in-school lessons and can provide your musician with the one-on-one attention they need. Each student is different, but with young beginner musicians, I recommend a half hour lesson.

For intermediate or advanced flutists, we'll focus on honing your technique, strengthening your foundation, body awareness, and providing you with all of the tools to express music in the way you wish. We'll fill in holes and correct habits that may have been previously learned. All advanced students still in high school are encouraged to audition for the All-State Festival, Honors Band Festivals, and any competitions or masterclasses in the area. When it comes time to upgrade on instruments, I will be there to answer any and all questions and accompany you to try out flutes. With more advanced students, I recommend a 45 minute or hour long lesson.

For adults coming back to the instrument, we’ll focus on creating ease of playing and get your playing back to an enjoyable place. For adults who want to better their playing, we’ll fill in holes and correct habits that may be inhibiting your playing. We’ll focus on body awareness, techniques, and developing a sense of musicality and interpretation. Repertoire will be picked based on level, goals, and personal interest.

I have experience working with students with physical and intellectual disabilities as well as mental disorders and would be happy to set up a consultation with you and your family before starting lessons.

Lessons are offered in my home studio in Barrington, NH, Manchester Community Music School, Concord Community Music School, or Portsmouth Music and Arts Center For studio policies, lesson rates, and available time slots, please contact me! For students with financial concerns, please contact me to discuss options.
