VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: A Norfolk Rhapsody
GOOSENS: Oboe Concerto
LATHAM: Elegy for Oboe and Orchestra
TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony no 5
Our program begins with a tour of England. "A Norfolk Rhapsody" by Ralph Vaughan Williams will put us in a bucolic mood. We next feature our wonderful principal oboist, Alicia Rockenhauser, in two pieces. First, the Oboe Concert by English composer, Eugene Goossens written for his brother, the renowned oboist, Leon Goossens. Next, a lovely Elegy for Oboe and Orchestra, composed by our own conductor and composer, Mark Latham. We conclude our concert with the powerful and melodic Fifth Symphony of Tchaikovsky. Beginning with a dark melody played by the clarinet, the theme transforms during the symphony into a triumphant and joyous affirmation in the last movement. The symphony ends with the same rhythmical pattern of notes that begins Beethoven's famous Fifth Symphony. An homage to an earlier master? Come and hear for yourself!
